United States President Barack Obama has formally kicked off his re-election campaign. In a rally in Ohio, President Obama said the economy is now moving forward and it would suffer if Republican candidate Mitt Romney wins.

Speaking to the crown, Obama said Romney’s win would mean implementing ‘bad ideas’ like spending cuts on various social programs and tax breaks for the rich. He pleaded to the people of Ohio not to give Romney a chance to win the presidency, saying today’s economy is a make-or-break situation for the middle class.

Obama also reminded the crowd that he took office when the country was in a deep economic crisis, a scenario the world hasn’t seen during the Depression in the 1930s. Job unemployment in the US remains at 8.1 percent.

The President said he and the American people fought their way back and didn’t quit. He added that it would take a sustained and persistent effort for everyone to help the country fully recover.

Obama, however, acknowledged Romney for his patriotism and love for family. He also praised Romney for his business acumen and for having a solid track record in business.

The President, however, said that Romney’s view is that when wealthy investors and CEOs make money, this equates to the rest of the population making money, as well. Obama said this is not the case.

Earlier, First Lady Michelle Obama met with blue-collar workers and reminded them that the President is just like them who came from humble beginnings and whose family also struggled to make a living.

The First Lady said the President knows the struggles of middle-income families and this knowledge is what he is bringing on his second term as President of the United States.

It appears that North Korea is preparing the launch its missile despite outcry from world leaders. A satellite image revealed that the country is showing no sign to halt the operations.

The satellite image was taken in Tongchang-ri, where it is believed to be the location of the launch. US-Korea Institute at John Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies analyzed the image, which showed fuel tanks and trucks, which would be used as store propellant of the missile.

North Korea came under fire when it announced that it is launching its satellite on April 15. The announcement coincided with the nuclear disarmament summit, a global meeting of world leaders. The summit was held in Seoul, South Korea.

The observation satellite launch is also in remembrance of the 100th birth of North Korea’s founder Kim Il-sung. The United States, however, the move is in direct violation of UN Security Council resolutions.

US President Barack Obama has also issued a statement saying North Korea should abort the plans but it is apparent the North Korea leaders are ignoring the appeal.

Australia Prime Minister Julia Gillard tried to allay fears in her home country, saying it is unlikely that missile debris will reach Australian shores.

Based on the institute’s analysis, different stages of the rocket will be implemented separately. The launch pad is estimated to be 1,000 meters away.

Peter Lavoy, US Assistant Secretary of Defense for Asia Pacific security affairs, downplayed North Korea’s efforts, saying the rocket would be unstable and that it would not cause any casualty.

Prime Minister Julia Gillard has confirmed reports that officials of the country are discussing with the Pentagon in the United States. The discussion focuses on Cocos Islands, an Australian territory.

Reports indicate that the Pentagon is interested in using the area as its base for their surveillance drones or spy planes called the Global Hawk.

Prime Minister Gillard, however, insisted that there has been no agreement at this point. The Prime Minister also refused to answer if she was in favor of this plan. Instead, she said that the matter is being discussed at “officials level.”

Last November, US President Barack Obama visited Australia. The country also welcomed 2,500 US Marines for its exercises in Darwin. During this visit, Defense Minister Stephen Smith mentioned that the Cocos Islands would be ideal for a joint Aus-US air base operation.

But a discussion over spy planes was nowhere mentioned in the agenda. Prime Minister Gillard said that the alliance is crucial to the nation’s security. She also said that she is in talks with Defense Minister Smith for the greater utilization of Cocos Islands although no decision has been made whether to bring in the marines in the near future.

Since the visit in November, no agreement has been set. Discussions are still ongoing but there has been no significant progress from these.

The Prime Minister is currently in South Korea for a nuclear security summit. The summit gathers about 50 world leaders to discuss issues on different internal and external threats related to nuclear materials and related topics.
