BlackBerry Bounces Back
Research in Motion, the maker of BlackBerry, announced that it posted a 235-million loss in the previous quarter. The number, however, is better than originally forecast and has caused a hike in its stock price.
This is the third consecutive quarter that Research in Motion posted a loss. The loss in the last quarter, however, is not as bad as industry analysts initially predicted. Still, the company remains struggling as it tries to keep up with the smartphone industry.
RIM president and chief executive officer Thorsten Heins said the company continues to implement changes in the organization and he believes the impact is reflected in the second-quarter results.
Industry observers that the BlackBerry 10 may be able to put Blackberry back on track. The BlackBerry 10 is expected to compete head-on with other smartphones like Android devices and iPhone. Heins said the device is on track to be launched in the first quarter of next year.
RIM has also shipped close to 7.5 million BlackBerry smartphones, including 130,000 PlayBook tablets. The company has about 80 million subscribers worldwide.
Heins said that developers and carriers have been giving positive feedback about the BlackBerry 10. Although there is much work to be done, Heins feels confident that it, along with the organizational changes being implemented, would help improve the company.
Heins added that there will be a campaign to promote and drive sales for the BlackBerry 7.
