The Shire: Ten’s New Expose on Our Southern Neighbours

March 20, 2012 by Ben Collins in People

In the tradition of Jersey Shore and Geordie Shore, Channel Ten has hopped on the trash band wagon and announced that production is about to commence on The Shire, a reality TV show that will give us all “real life” insights into life in the Sutherland Shire. David Mott, chief programming officer at Network Ten announced:

The Shire is a fascinating look into a unique sub-culture in Australia and the first time a local dramality series is being introduced to the commercial television landscape. The Shire is a glimpse behind the curtain into the heart of Australia as you have never seen it before. From their hectic and crazed social lives to problems with work and family, The Shire will leave no stone unturned

Whilst the world’s fascination with all things trashy seems to have grown over recent years, the Mayor of Sutherland Shire Carol Provan has vowed to do everything in her power (however limited that is for a local Councillor) to stop production. Her view is that:

It’s taken us a long time to heal from the Sylvania Waters reality show and then of course we had that drama (the Cronulla riots) five years ago, we’re only just getting over all that and we just don’t need this type of publicity. Our legal people are now trying to find ways to stop them.

With filming yet to start, it has been made clear that the network will get no help from the local council, and they will do their best to make it difficult for them to produce this show that, and let’s face it, was inevitably going to be made.

Unless Gina Rhinehardt steps in to look after her Channel Ten commercial interests, it looks like this battle could delay production of the reality show. It is unlikely that any delay will delay potential watchers the opportunity to be infused with profound insight from the carefully selected cast of The Shire.
