City of Sydney Council Rejects Mega-Brothel

April 17, 2012 by rochelle in Business with 0 Comments

The City of Sydney Council has rejected the proposal of develop Artazan Property Group to build the largest brothel in Australia.

The 10 councillor-members of the council have unanimously voted against the application, saying they have serious concerns of the development’s effects on the community.

Artazan Property Group, owned by Eddie Hayson, plans to expand its Stiletto’s in Camperdown by expanding its working rooms from 19 to 40 and the addition of 21 waiting rooms. The expansion would also include a three-storey extension in Parramatta Road.

Lord Mayor Clover said residents have expressed serious concerns regarding the expansion, citing negative impacts on traffic and promoting anti-social behaviours. He added that the development is not consistent with the city’s vision.

Councillor Shayne Mallard called the development “the Westfield of brothers.” He raised the issue that the city needs to come up with more specific restrictions on large-scale projects and developments.

Mallard said that cities like Melbourne and Brisbane have imposed restrictions and zoning laws for similar establishments. He added that a review needs to be conducted and should be aligned with the city’s plan, which he believes does not include the building of a mega-brothel.

The City of Sydney Council has received about 80 public submissions, which all objected to the expansion proposal. Among the reasons raised include overdevelopment and security issues.

Artazan, however, challenged the council’s decision, saying the expansion would generate jobs for the locals and that it would have a maximum of 50 employees at any given time. It also cited that the mega-brothel would result to positive economic effects.
