Attorney General Cries Foul Over MRRT
The Queensland government, through its Federal Treasure, Wayne Swan, is confident that newly enforced Minerals Resource Rent Tax (MRRT) can withstand the legal challenges facing it.
Attorney General Jarrod Bleijie has raised some legal questions over MRRT, which took effect last July 1. Bleijie is questioning the validity of the MRRT, saying that it seems like a waste of taxpayers’ money.
He added that not even Western Australia’s premier would entertain MRRT because he knows that it would prove to be unsuccessful.
The Attorney-General also believed that Clive Palmer had a hand in the decisions. Bleijie categorically said that the Liberal National Party (LNP) is prepared to give Palmer a big tax cut with this new development.
Palmer is one of the most influential magnates and a member of the LNP.
The Attorney General also challenged the Newman government to act on this, calling the MRRT a threat to the mining industry and several of the jobs it upholds.
Bleijie said that everyone wants to reduce Queensland’s unemployment rate to four percent in the next six years. He added that this scenario is not possible if the federal government would keep attacking the resource-rich mining industry.
In separate radio statements, Bleijie said that this is a fight that would be very difficult to win. He, however, is convinced that this is something that needs to be done. He also said that he has the Crown Law’s backing to ensure that taxpayers’ money will not be spent nor go to waste.
